ANTIQUE CAPTAIN'S "LAP" DESK

This antique, rosewood letter writing lap desk circa early 1900s. These lap desks were commonly used by sailors in lieu of a real desk (lack of space) to keep their letters and other papers private. The desk has gold paint trim (see pictures). The desk comes with the original key but the lock doesn't seem to work. The scrimshaw art is done on a piece of walrus tusk. We restored this well-preserved piece back to near original condition… the rosewood was refinished (inside and out) and new felt was added to the writing surface.
